Miller Bourne Architects were appointed by East Sussex County Council to develop a long term Master plan for the existing school site of the Baird Primary Academy in Hastings. The Master plan had the development of a standalone Early Years facility (Phase 1) followed by further phases replacing the existing school buildings and the possible development of community sports facilities. The design for the Early Years Facility was developed with Morgan Sindall Construction. The building is set on two levels utilising the existing slope of the site, with the main entrance and reception set at a lower level and the upper level accommodating a hall and six classrooms which open onto dedicated outdoor teaching areas and the playground. Classrooms would be naturally ventilated using crossflow from the windows up through roof lights which would also provide natural light to the rear of the classrooms.
