St Bede’s Boarding House - Worth School

St Bedes Boarding House 2

The new St Bede’s boarding house provides residential accommodation for 56 students, replacing existing dormitory style facilities in the main school with modern study bedrooms.

The design places the required accommodation over three floors and in a mixture of single, double and triple bedded rooms. In addition to the student requirements, two separate staff houses were built and linked back to the main house for supervisory purposes.

The new house is close to a number of listed buildings and was designed to reflect and complement the historic architecture of the school.

The footprint of the building was laid out to minimise mature tree loss and fit around root protection areas and its position also required the re-alignment of a public footpath which crossed the site.

The environment immediately surrounding the new building was also subject to wildlife surveys and the creation of alternative bat roosting habitats.

The building won a Sussex Heritage design award in 2013.
