The design of new educational facilities – as well as the remodelling and refurbishment of existing facilities – is a major strand of our work.

It’s also one of the most rewarding. Schools are places where children learn, play, socialise and grow. We place students and staff at the heart of our designs to create innovative school buildings that lead to a transformative and positive effect on learning outcomes.

Schools are communities, not just buildings...

With extensive experience of working with both local authorities, academy trusts and the fee-paying school sector, we have dedicated our expertise over three decades to the architectural design and realisation of inspiring learning spaces to support children and staff in schools, nurseries, academies and colleges across the Southeast of England.

In every project, we focus on getting the brief right at the outset to understand how your building will be used and needs to perform to provide the right environment for its young users to flourish.

What our clients say

  • "Miller Bourne have produced for us many beautiful buildings with delightful interiors and external elevations that fit well with their settings. I appreciate their attention to detail. They’ll look at a project front to back and back to front and work collaboratively to achieve your goals, rather than ever over-specifying or ‘dictating’. They're pragmatic and practical; they listen; they take your needs on board. Plus, they’re efficient and a pleasure to work with."
Emma Humphreys, Estate Bursar, Charterhouse School
  • "Once prospective parents and pupils see our facilities now, the reaction is usually ‘wow!’. For us, Miller Bourne have shown us what’s possible and then made it happen. Their design solutions are always clever, always innovative. They’ve worked as our trusted partners across two decades on multiple projects, most recently the opening of the Nugee and Winn buildings, a £33-million strategic development of our teaching, sports, and dining facilities that coincided with our 150th anniversary. Miller Bourne are a team that bring creativity and ingenuity, but also the nuts and bolts of pragmatism and realism with regards to budget and deliver. I’d highlight, too, their strong relationships with local authorities and tacit understanding of the planning."
Nick Chapman, Head of Facilities Management, Eastbourne College
  • “We’ve worked with Miller Bourne since 2005. As a practice, they’ve got clout and strong relationships with the independent schools sector and they always deliver an excellent service. They created our college masterplan and their strength, for us, is in their understanding of our 150-acre campus, which presents challenges with its listed buildings and setting. They approach it sympathetically, knowing the fabric but at the same time aren't staid and traditional so we don't lose any innovative flair. They’ve designed and built many of our new building projects, including boarding houses, library, science block, sixth-form centre, and currently a new sports centre and swimming pool.”
    Dan Higgins, CEO, Hurstpierpoint College
  • Miller Bourne have worked with ESCC on numerous schools and community projects. Their design solutions are contemporary, innovative, and exciting and manage to interpret and incorporate the vision of multiple stakeholders. Their expertise with the workings of the local authority – and the broader public sector is highly valued – as is their understanding of the need to achieve financial and sustainable value with their robust, futureproofed and fit for purpose solutions. They’re always friendly, willing to engage, and excellent at collaboration.
Alice Smyth, Programme Manager, East Sussex County Council
  • "Miller Bourne are pragmatic and practical. They think ‘outside the box’ when it comes to aspirations and produce aesthetic solutions that achieve buildability and affordability. I’ve always found them a safe pair of hands with the detailing and delivery. I value their schools expertise and knowledge of the design guidance, and familiarity with STREIF. Plus, they’re a friendly bunch. In this business, relationships are everything. Their team knows how to develop trust and that in turn engenders confidence."
Robert Atkinson, Head Of Design, Southern Home Counties, Morgan Sindall
