Miller Bourne was tasked to create a masterplan for the site of leading independent, co-educational day and boarding school, Caterham School, in recognition of the school’s need to evolve and adapt to meet new demands through its buildings and facilities.
Our work, which began back in 2003 with Caterham School, has entailed multiple involvements in the design and construction of the school’s new buildings. These include science labs, dining facilities, art school, boarding accommodation, sports pavilion, and most recently, a performing arts facility and a second sports pavilion for rugby and cricket.
Completion of these developments provided the right opportunity for the school to review their current and future needs and aspirations and develop a new masterplan to take the school forward for the next decade.
The Caterham School Masterplan covered all aspects of the school, from education, boarding, sporting to ancillary, over the entire site.
It encompassed both the large scale – in terms of identifying and siting of new buildings – to the small scale – in examining existing use of all spaces – and re-planning them where necessary in line with the school’s needs.
We consulted with the various stakeholders within the school and worked with the Headmaster and Bursar in forging our proposals.
The masterplan will soon be presented to the school’s governing body and then presented to the local planning authority.
