The original school dining room was designed by Richard Gilbert Scott, son of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, and was laid out to provide dining rooms for individual houses, based around a central kitchen.
As part of their plan to becoming a co-educational school and a consequent increase in pupil numbers, Charterhouse School commissioned Miller Bourne to undertake a comprehensive redesign to move from the house based dining room system and to a single dining room, for use by all irrespective of house.
The segmented roof turrets, one over each of the original dining rooms, were extensively redesigned, internally and externally, to provide natural light and ventilation deep into the building. The internal walls separating the original dining rooms were removed and two new serveries provided each side of the building to increase the efficiency of the dining operation. The interiors were given a contemporary finish, enhancing the original design.
