Miller Bourne have had a long involvement at Dunottar School in Reigate, which recently required the development of a multi-phased Masterplan to accommodate an increase in pupil numbers and transition to co-education
As a result of this study it was established that there was a pressing requirement to form a new sixth form centre in the heart of the school.
With a number of competing site restrictions, Miller Bourne designed a new single storey extension onto an existing two storey building, which itself was extensively reconfigured and refurbished, to provide teaching spaces for the sixth form. This allowed the sixth form to become closer to the main entrance of the school and adjacent to the classrooms / study spaces.
The extension was low-profile, flat roofed with high levels of glazing to assist in assimilating the building into the landscape. The materials and building form were designed to be sensitive to neighbouring listed buildings and locally listed gardens the school lies in. The extension houses a common room for 100 pupils, recreation room and office while the refurbished building has four classrooms, collaborative study and silent study rooms.

After the development of the multi-phased Masterplan it was established that not only was there a pressing requirement for a new sixth form centre but that there was also a need for a new multi-functional hall that could be used for assemblies, examinations, school theatre productions as well as music, drama and dance teaching. The flexibility of the space was enhanced by bleacher seating which allowed further options. The facility centralised the music and drama teaching as well as music practice rooms which were previously spread across the school campus. The generous entrance lobby was designed to hold smaller events and associated administration and non-teaching facilities.
The materials and building form were again designed to be sensitive to neighbouring listed buildings and gardens. The building had an axial symmetry and verticality of fenestration which is found on other buildings on the site. The building was constructed from masonry with brickwork to match the styles of surrounding buildings. These were further enhanced by careful detailing such as the dentition brickwork around building features.
