Hurstpierpoint College was founded by Nathaniel Woodard in 1849 and is part of the Woodard Corporation. St John's Middle Grammar School, as it was named at the time, was based in a cottage in Shoreham. As the school grew it was transferred to The Mansion House in Hurstpierpoint Village, West Sussex in 1850.
The college is one of the leading independent schools in the southeast located in generous grounds just north of the Hurstpierpoint and the south downs. The main buildings are in the English gothic style that was constructed in the 1850s and is still the central part of the campus today. The school is designed around two quadrangles, with an Inner and Outer Quad, and incorporated into the main building is the College Chapel, St John's.
Miller Bourne first developed a Masterplan for Hurstpierpoint College in 2006 prior to the school entering a growth phase which has seen pupil numbers double from 600 to over 1200. This growth required a phased strategy to accommodate the ever growing cohort for teaching and boarding as well as sporting and staff facilities.
Over the years the Masterplan has been revisited as a number of the development proposals have been completed, including Science Labs, a Science & DT block a new LRC, Boarding Houses and a PAC but also to reflect changing priorities and adapting to new teaching requirements.
