Miller Bourne were asked to put forward proposals for an extension to Caterham School’s existing theatre space - Humphreys Hall, to provide a professional quality studio theatre, a small dance studio, music recording facilities, office space and a large foyer/bar area.
The site is located in the heart of the campus on a small area of sloping land. The building combines a mixture of stock bricks to the side elevations, matching the majority of the School’s adjacent buildings, and a glass curtain wall to the main elevation, capped with a swept roof.
During the design phase Miller Bourne proposed a small amphitheatre for the external landscaping, which has added a popular focal point to the front of the building. Each individual vertical brise soleil blade is illuminated at night by a coloured LED light; these can be controlled to create a striking kaleidoscopic effect, programmable to suit events in the building.
