Miller Bourne was appointed to refurbish Roedean School library, located in a Grade II Listed building.
The brief was to create a contemporary space echoing the feel of a stylish bookshop, whilst still maintaining a traditional library atmosphere. The client wished to use the space for individual and group study, formal and informal study, and for presentations, events, and exhibitions.
The scheme has been designed to be flexible, with the use of mobile bookcases allowing the central space to be opened up as an event space and for presentations via a large video display screen set within bespoke acoustic timber paneling.
The existing floor finishes have been removed to expose the original oak floor below which has been fully restored and remains exposed either side of a new central carpet. Bookcases have been positioned such that views of the historic ‘honours boards’ are enhanced and two small side rooms adjacent to the library have been opened-up to become part of the overall library.
