Woldingham School approached Miller Bourne to undertake a feasibility study of the options for their existing sub-standard swimming pool, to improve the facility, rather than construct an entirely new swimming pool as had been previously considered.
Three options were proposed, and the one selected reused the existing pool and structure of the pool’s enclosure and changing rooms/plant, both constructed at different periods. These are to be stripped back and insulated panels are to reclad all elements. This will give holistic aesthetic to the swimming pool and provide much needed insulation, as well as cutting down on the overheating from solar gain. Internally the changing rooms were replanned and will be fully refurbished. The M&E provision will be updated, and heating now supplied by air source heat pumps.
This option is considerably cheaper than a new build option. By reusing the pool and the structure of the enclosure, it also offered considerable embodied carbon savings, compared with a new build option. The reduction in solar gain, increase in insulation and renewable energy provision will also reduce the operational carbon costs. Overall making this the most sustainable option for the school.
The scheme was granted planning permission in April 2024 and it is hoped construction will commence in 2025.
